Fort Pampus

The island fortress was built between 1887 and 1895 in the Outer IJ. In the building of the fort were two huge turrets with two guns of 24 cm caliber. During WWII, the turrets where blown up  by the Germans. The original function was a  defend system for Amsterdam  against attack from the former Zuiderzee, in cooperation with the batteries  Diemerdam and Durgerdam.
